Originally known as The Story of the Three Bears, this children’s story was first recorded by English author and poet Robert Southey in 1837. The story has undergone many changes of the years. For example, Goldilocks was originally an old woman and mummy; daddy and baby bear were three male bears. The story of the Three Bears is one of the most popular fairy tales in the English language and has been adapted for movies, opera and even board games.

Fairy tales are generally short stories and typically included characters such as fairies, giants, gnomes, goblins as well as magic. Amongst the most famous writers and collectors of fairy stories in the English speaking world are Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm. Hans Christian Andersen came from Denmark and amongst his many stories includes The Snow Queen, The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, The Little Match Girl and the Ugly Duckling. The Brothers Grimm came from Germany and were best known for stories such as Cinderella, Rumpelstiltskin, Snow White, Rapunzel and Hansel and Gretel.
